Donate Your Car by Dec 31 in San Diego for 2024 Tax Break

In San Diego Metro, a 2‑minute form or quick call gets your free tow scheduled fast. If your car is picked up on or before Dec 31, your IRS tax deduction counts for this year.

Live in the San Diego Metro and ready to donate your car before year-end? Here’s the bottom line: the IRS uses your actual pickup date as the donation date. If our licensed tow truck picks up your vehicle on or before December 31, your car donation counts for this tax year. With Wheel Forward and our partner charity, Heritage for the Blind (a 501(c)(3), EIN 58-2164446), it takes about two minutes to start. Most donors in San Diego get a free tow the same day or the next business day.

We know December in San Diego moves fast, from commuting through Mission Valley to getting across the I-5 from Chula Vista to Oceanside. That’s why we keep the process simple: no smog check, no repairs, and your car does not need to run or be recently registered. We’ll coordinate free pickup anywhere in the San Diego Metro—downtown, North Park, La Jolla, Clairemont, El Cajon, National City, Escondido, Chula Vista and more. You donate locally, your vehicle supports services for people who are blind or visually impaired, and you receive the tax paperwork you need after the sale. Start now so you can still get a this-year deduction before the December 31 tow slots fill up.

2

Get a callback to lock in your pickup date

Within 1–2 business hours (weekdays)

A dedicated coordinator calls you back within 1–2 business hours on weekdays to confirm details and schedule your free tow. Tell us you need pickup by Dec 31 for this year’s taxes. We’ll prioritize your San Diego Metro time window and confirm your appointment on the phone.

3

Free tow truck arrives at your San Diego address

Same day or next business day in most metro areas

A licensed tow truck comes to your home, office, or shop—whether you’re in Pacific Beach, La Mesa, Mira Mesa, or elsewhere in San Diego Metro. In most metro areas, we can tow the same day or next business day. The actual pickup date is what locks in your IRS donation year.

4

Sign the title and hand over the keys

10 minutes at pickup

At pickup, you sign your title over to Heritage for the Blind (our 501(c)(3) partner). The driver will show you where to sign and collect keys if you have them. No smog check or inspection is needed, and the vehicle does not have to run to be accepted.

5

We sell the vehicle and mail your tax paperwork

Receipt mailed within 30 days of sale

After towing, your vehicle is transported, processed, and sold. Within 30 days of the sale, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment or IRS Form 1098‑C, depending on the sale amount. Keep this with your records to claim your current-year deduction when you file.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Pickup date controls the tax year

For vehicle donations, the IRS recognizes the date you fully transfer the car to the charity—practically, that’s your pickup date. If your car is picked up on or before Dec 31, it’s treated as a donation for that tax year.

Form 1098‑C for larger vehicle deductions

If your donated car is sold for more than the IRS threshold, Heritage for the Blind will issue IRS Form 1098‑C. This form shows the gross sale price, which typically sets the maximum you can deduct on your federal return.

Deduction usually equals sale price

In most cases, your allowable federal deduction for a car donation equals the amount the charity receives from selling the vehicle. There are limited exceptions, but for typical San Diego donors, the sale price is the figure you’ll use on Schedule A.

30‑day written acknowledgment requirement

The charity must send you a written acknowledgment—or Form 1098‑C—within 30 days after the vehicle is sold. Keep this with your tax records; your tax preparer will use it to document your non-cash charitable contribution.

Itemizing on Schedule A

To claim a car donation, you generally need to itemize deductions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Talk with your tax advisor to confirm whether itemizing with your car donation gives you a better overall tax result.

FAQ

If my car is picked up on December 31 in San Diego, is the deduction for this year?
Yes. The key date the IRS looks at is when you transfer the vehicle to the charity, which for most donors is the physical pickup date. If our tow truck picks up your car on or before December 31 in the San Diego area, your donation counts for this tax year, even though the sale and paperwork arrive later.
How late in December can I contact you and still get a Dec 31 pickup?
Dispatch runs Monday–Saturday, and December fills quickly in San Diego Metro. The sooner you start—ideally by mid‑December—the better chance we have to match your schedule. We can often arrange same‑day or next‑business‑day tows, but year‑end slots are limited, so submit the form or call as early as possible.
My car doesn’t run and the registration is expired. Can I still donate?
Yes. Non‑running vehicles and cars with expired registration are accepted in most situations. You don’t need to repair it or pass an inspection. Just tell us the condition when you complete the 2‑minute form or call, and we’ll send a licensed tow truck to handle everything at your San Diego‑area location.
What paperwork do I need at pickup in California?
In most California donations, you’ll need the vehicle title and a valid ID. At pickup, you’ll sign the title over to Heritage for the Blind. The driver will guide you through where to sign. If you can’t find the title, let us know during scheduling—options may be available depending on your situation and DMV records.
When will I get my tax receipt or Form 1098‑C?
After we tow your vehicle, it’s processed and sold. Within 30 days of the sale, Heritage for the Blind will mail your written acknowledgment or IRS Form 1098‑C. Keep this with your tax documents; it shows the sale amount and serves as proof of your charitable contribution for your federal return.
Do I need to get a specific minimum value for the donation to be worthwhile?
Not necessarily. Even older or high‑mileage vehicles can help support services for people who are blind or visually impaired, and you may still receive a meaningful deduction depending on the sale price and whether you itemize. Your tax benefit depends on the final sale and your tax situation, so consult a tax professional for personalized advice.
Where in San Diego Metro can you pick up my car for free?
Free towing covers the greater San Diego Metro—downtown, Hillcrest, North Park, Clairemont, La Jolla, Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Chula Vista, National City, La Mesa, El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and more. Just tell us where the vehicle is located; a licensed tow truck will meet you there at your scheduled time window.
