How the car donation process works
Start with the vehicle and title details
When you contact Wheel Forward, share the vehicle year, make, model, location, and what paperwork you have in hand. A clean title is preferred because it makes transfer fastest, but it is not always the end of the road if something is missing. Tell us if the title is lost, out of state, lists a lienholder, or is in another person’s name. Heritage for the Blind can review the situation before pickup so you know the next step for your San Diego Metro donation.

Once the paperwork path is clear, a free tow can be arranged at a convenient location, whether the vehicle is parked at your home, apartment, workplace, repair shop, or storage location. Donors in San Diego, Chula Vista, La Mesa, Santee, Poway, Carlsbad, Encinitas, and surrounding areas can usually complete the process without hauling the vehicle anywhere. The tow driver will arrive with the pickup paperwork and will confirm the vehicle information before the car is loaded.
Sign the title over at pickup
At pickup, the title should be signed over to Heritage for the Blind, EIN 58-2164446. The driver will bring the donation paperwork and explain where signatures are needed, so you do not have to guess. Please do not cross out, erase, or write extra notes on the title before the appointment, because title corrections can delay processing. After the handoff, the driver takes the vehicle and the signed paperwork, and a receipt or confirmation is provided for your records.
Handle lost titles, liens, or name issues before towing
If the title is lost, Heritage for the Blind can help you navigate your state’s replacement-title process, and some vehicles without titles can sometimes still be accepted after a review. If a lender is listed, the lien must be satisfied before donation, or you should contact the lender to release the title. If the title is in a deceased spouse’s or parent’s name, you may need probate paperwork, an affidavit of heirship, or another state-specific document. Call first so the right route is confirmed.
Use out-of-state titles and finish your records
Many San Diego Metro residents own vehicles titled in another state because of moves, military service, college, or family transfers. Foreign-state and out-of-state titles can often be accepted, as long as the ownership paperwork is valid and signed correctly. After the title is handed off, donors typically do not need an in-person DMV visit; if a release of liability or similar notice applies, it may often be completed online. For vehicles that qualify over $500, Heritage for the Blind provides IRS Form 1098-C.
