How the car donation process works
Start with the 2-minute donation form or call Heritage
Begin by filling out Wheel Forward's simple online vehicle donation form, which usually takes about two minutes. You can also call Heritage for the Blind directly if you prefer to speak with someone before submitting your information. You will be asked for basic details such as your name, contact information, vehicle year, make, model, condition, location, and whether you have the title. You do not need to know the vehicle's value, and you do not have to arrange towing yourself. This first step simply lets the donation team confirm the vehicle and prepare for pickup in San Diego Metro.
A coordinator calls back within 1-2 business hours
After your form is submitted, a donation coordinator typically calls back within 1-2 business hours to review the details and answer questions. This is the best time to mention whether the car starts, if the tires are flat, if it is in a garage, or if pickup access is limited. Donors across San Diego neighborhoods and nearby suburbs can choose a pickup location that works for them, such as a home, apartment complex, office, repair shop, or storage lot. The coordinator then helps schedule your free tow and explains what to have ready before the driver arrives.
A licensed tow truck picks up the vehicle for free
In most metro areas, including much of San Diego Metro, pickup can often be scheduled for the same day or the next business day, depending on availability and access. A licensed tow truck comes to the address you approved, and there is no towing charge to you. At pickup, you sign the title over so the vehicle can be legally transferred. In California, the title is commonly called the Certificate of Title, and your coordinator can walk you through basic title questions before pickup. Remove your plates if instructed, clear personal belongings, and keep a copy of any paperwork you receive.
Your vehicle is sent to auction or a parts reseller
Once the tow is complete, your vehicle is transported to the appropriate resale channel. Many donated cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, RVs, and other vehicles are sent to auction, while some non-running or heavily damaged vehicles may be directed to a parts reseller. You do not have to attend the sale, negotiate with buyers, or manage any listing. The goal is to convert the donated vehicle into proceeds for the charity as efficiently as possible. This step is also why the final tax paperwork is not prepared immediately at pickup; the vehicle must sell first.
Sale proceeds support Heritage for the Blind's mission
After the vehicle sells, the net proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind, a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, EIN 58-2164446. Heritage uses charitable support to help fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Your donation through Wheel Forward turns an unwanted, unused, or hard-to-sell vehicle into support for a mission-focused charity without requiring you to handle advertising, repairs, towing, or buyer paperwork. If you are also exploring assistance programs, Heritage connects people with benefit resources such as SSI, LIHEAP, Medicare Extra Help, and Section 8; donors can check eligibility information at nhftb.org/finder.
Your tax receipt is mailed after the vehicle sells
The full process from donation to tax receipt typically takes 2-6 weeks because the vehicle must be picked up, processed, sold, and documented. After the sale is complete, your tax paperwork is mailed to you. If the vehicle sells for more than $500, you will receive IRS Form 1098-C. If the vehicle sells for $500 or under, you will receive a written acknowledgment. Keep this paperwork with your tax records and consult a tax professional about your specific deduction. There is no cost to you at any point in the donation process.
