If your car just failed smog in San Diego, you do NOT have to fix it to donate. With Wheel Forward, you can donate a vehicle that failed emissions anywhere in the San Diego Metro—La Mesa, Chula Vista, Oceanside, North Park, or downtown—and still receive a tax-deductible receipt. Heritage for the Blind, a real 501(c)(3), accepts vehicles in virtually any condition, including those that can’t pass California smog. Your failed test does not disqualify your car from helping people who are blind or visually impaired.
Here’s how it works in California: a charitable donation is a title transfer to a nonprofit, not a private sale. The smog certification rules that usually apply when you sell a car to another person generally do NOT apply when you donate to charity. Wheel Forward arranges free towing from your home, office, or shop in places like Clairemont, El Cajon, Escondido, or Pacific Beach. The vehicle is sold as-is at auction or to a buyer who knows it needs emissions work. You don’t pay for repairs, you don’t need a current smog certificate, and you still get a written tax receipt based on IRS rules.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm your failed smog doesn’t disqualify your car
Your car, SUV, truck, or van that failed a smog or emissions test in the San Diego area is still eligible. Wheel Forward works with Heritage for the Blind, which accepts vehicles in almost any condition, including non‑passing smog results, check-engine lights, or expired tags.
2. Share a few details about the vehicle and title
Provide basic info: location (e.g., Mission Valley, National City, Carlsbad), year/make/model, and whether you have a valid title. Mention that it failed smog so we can plan the tow. In most cases, even non-running or non-registered vehicles can still be donated.
3. Schedule free pickup anywhere in the San Diego Metro
Choose a pickup time that works for you. A licensed tow partner comes to your home, apartment, or shop—whether you’re in Hillcrest, Santee, Mira Mesa, or Imperial Beach. You pay nothing for towing; pickup is completely free and usually requires only a quick signature.
4. Sign over the title; we handle the rest
At pickup, you’ll sign the title over to Heritage for the Blind. Because this is a donation, not a private sale, you are usually not required to provide a current smog certificate. The tower takes the car as-is, including any emissions issues or failed tests, and you keep copies of the paperwork.
5. Vehicle is sold as-is; you receive your tax receipt
Heritage for the Blind sells your vehicle as-is at auction or to a buyer who understands it failed smog and may need repairs. After the sale, you receive a tax-deductible receipt—typically at least $500. If it sells for more than $500, you’ll also receive the IRS Form 1098-C details for your records.
6. Claim your deduction and know you helped locally and beyond
Use your receipt when you file federal taxes to claim your charitable deduction according to IRS rules. Meanwhile, your problem car is out of your driveway in San Diego and its value supports services for people who are blind or visually impaired through Heritage for the Blind.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or problem title in California
Tip: If you’ve lost your California title or it lists an old address (say from a previous place in Kearny Mesa or Spring Valley), tell us up front. We can often guide you on requesting a duplicate title from the DMV so the donation doesn’t get delayed at pickup.
Active loan or lien on the vehicle
Tip: If there’s still a lienholder listed, we usually can’t complete the donation until the loan is paid and cleared. Contact your lender first to confirm the lien is released, then we can help you move forward quickly with the donation.
Vehicle abandoned at a shop or storage lot
Tip: If your failed-smog car is sitting at a mechanic in places like Poway or Encinitas, make sure you don’t owe storage fees and that the shop has permission to release it. Let us know the shop’s contact info so we can coordinate a smooth tow-out.
Out-of-date registration or accumulated fees
Tip: In many situations, older registration or DMV fee issues in California don’t stop a donation, but they can affect what the charity does after pickup. Be honest about any notices you’ve received so we can set expectations and complete the transfer correctly.
