If your car is sitting in North Park, Chula Vista, El Cajon, Oceanside, or tucked in a tight Mission Beach alley with no keys and no title, you can still donate it through Wheel Forward. Both problems are solvable. The keys are optional for us—as long as a tow truck can safely reach the vehicle, we can load it on a flatbed without starting it and remove it at no cost to you.
The title is the one thing California does require in almost every case. Your first step is simple: apply for a duplicate or replacement title with the California DMV. It usually costs a modest fee and takes about 1–4 weeks. As soon as you’re holding that duplicate title, you can sign it over to Wheel Forward and schedule your free pickup anywhere in the San Diego Metro area—from Hillcrest high-rises to suburban driveways in Poway or San Marcos. When you schedule, just tell us the vehicle has no keys so we send the right truck. You still receive a valid tax receipt, and proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm your car’s location and tow-truck access
Before anything else, make sure a tow truck can physically reach your vehicle. In San Diego this might mean checking alley clearance in Pacific Beach, garage height in Downtown, or driveway angles in La Mesa. Note if the car is blocked in, on a steep hill, or in a gated community. You don’t need keys, but safe access for a flatbed really matters.
2. Apply for a duplicate California title with the DMV
The missing title is the real barrier, so fix that first. Submit a duplicate title application with the California DMV online, by mail, or at a local office (like Clairemont or Chula Vista). You’ll pay a small fee and processing usually takes 1–4 weeks. Keep the address current so the new title arrives where you can receive and sign it.
3. Contact Wheel Forward and tell us you have no keys
Once your duplicate title is on its way (or in hand), reach out to Wheel Forward. Let us know your car has no keys and explain where it’s parked anywhere in San Diego Metro—from Mira Mesa to National City. We’ll flag your donation as a keyless, non-running pickup so our towing partner brings the correct flatbed and equipment.
4. Receive your duplicate title and sign it over
When the duplicate California title arrives, sign it following the DMV instructions. Then we’ll walk you through exactly where to sign to transfer ownership to Wheel Forward. You don’t need registration or smog for donation—just the properly signed title and a quick donation form so we can issue your tax receipt and schedule pickup.
5. Schedule free flatbed pickup anywhere in San Diego Metro
We set up a towing window that works for you—whether the car is in a Santee driveway, a Kearny Mesa shop lot, or a condo garage in Little Italy. Remind the dispatcher that there are no keys so a flatbed and winch are sent. Pickup is always free nationwide, and in most cases you don’t need to be present if paperwork is complete ahead of time.
6. Get your tax receipt and help fund vision services
After the vehicle is picked up and processed, Wheel Forward sends your tax receipt. You’re generally entitled to at least a $500 deduction; larger deductions use IRS Form 1098-C based on the sale price. Your difficult, keyless car is now out of your way and helping fund Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Potential complications to watch for
The DMV title arrives at the wrong or old address
Tip: If you’ve moved from, say, City Heights to La Jolla, make sure your address is current with the DMV before requesting a duplicate title. Otherwise the new title may be mailed to your old address, delaying your donation by weeks while you correct records and request another replacement.
Vehicle is blocked, underground, or hard to reach without keys
Tip: Towing a keyless car from tight garages in Downtown or steep driveways in Rancho Peñasquitos can require special equipment. When you schedule, describe the exact situation: level surface or slope, ceiling clearance, gate codes, and other parked cars. Good details up front prevent failed pickup attempts and rescheduling delays.
A lien or loan still shows on the vehicle title record
Tip: If there was ever a loan on the car, the DMV record may still show a lienholder. That usually has to be cleared before donation. Gather any payoff letters or contact the lender so the DMV can issue a clean duplicate title in your name. Wheel Forward can still accept the car once the lien is released and the title is updated.
Out-of-state title or different state DMV rules
Tip: If your vehicle is titled in another state but sitting here in San Diego, you generally must get the duplicate from that state’s DMV. Timelines and fees vary. Apply there first, wait for the duplicate title, then donate through Wheel Forward. We’ll still arrange free pickup in San Diego once your paperwork is ready.
